    Charta Spring Workshop 2001
"Ignite Your Spirit in Recreation Therapy"

On Friday, 4/27/01, Charta held its Spring 2001 Workshop at Kernan Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Charta is indeed grateful to Linda Hutchinson-Troyer and Kernan Hospital for being Charta's host.

53 Charta members attended the workshop! Members, in addition to being served breakfast and lunch, were able to increase their knowledge base with four diverse presentations.

Linda Hutchinson-Troyer led off with her presentation of the "Healing Garden". She provided detailed information on how Kernan in developed an on campus garden as a therapeutic intervention.

The second session was a panel discussion with presentations from Jennifer Robinson (ATRA State Initiatives), Marcia Smith (Legislation and Mental Health), Jon Palks (changes in the Veteran's Administration and Health Care, and Linda Hutchinson-Troyer (CARF). This session was extremely informative and provided the membership with the future direction of recreation therapy.

At lunch the membership heard from Michael Duquette, (President), regarding the "State of Charta", and Jennifer Robinson, (Charta Legislative Chair), regarding plans for the "District Day" to be held in July.

Pat Kaiser began the afternoon sessions with an overview of Aquatic Therapy to include specific techniques and resources.

The final presentation was on R.T. in the Public Schools. Evan Braff enlightened the group on what kind of therapeutic recreation services Fairfax County was providing to its citizens via the school system.

The next Charta workshop will be in the Fall. Keep checking Charta's website for information.
